On the Singapore Memorial is the name of 1006283 Leading Aircraftman George Hilton Hunter, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 07/10/1944.

In St.John's Churchyard, Seaton Hirst is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Elizabeth Ann
beloved wife of
George Hunter
died 25th Jan. 1944 aged 67 years.
Also the above
George Hunter
died 16th Feb. 1946 aged 75 years.
Also their dear son
George Hilton, R.A.F.
died at sea 7th Oct. 1944
Whilst Japanese Prisoner of War.

Leading Aircraftman Hunter died whilst being held as a Prisoner of War by the Japanese on Java. The Newcastle Journal of Monday 21/06/1941 had the following short report:
PRISONERS OF WAR
A.C./1 George Hilton Hunter, R.A.F., 264 Hawthorne Road, Ashington.
