In Ridge Wood Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium is the Commonwealth War Grave of 6904 Private John James Shiel serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 06/09/1915.

In Holy Sepulchre Churchyard is a headstone which reads:

Herbert
The beloved husband of Agnes Terry
Died June 21st 1921
Also John James Shiel
Killed in action Sept. 6th 1915.

He is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43
