Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

David Atkinson was born in 1881 at North Seaton, Northumberland according to the census reports and Birtley, County Durham in some military records. His parents were Ralph and Elizabeth Atkinson.

In the 1901 Census David Atkinson is shown living in his father’s house at North Seaton. His father at this time was 63 years old and David was 20.

David lived at Choppington, Northumberland in 1911 at 22, Single (Second) Row, his brother in law’s house, where he was single and employed as a bootmaker. The census record shows him to be 30 years old.

There are some irregularities associated with this soldier’s details. These include the information on the photo which, if correct, shows David Atkinson to be a Private in the 8th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers and from Choppington (killed). All other information available confirms he was in the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 22nd Battalion with the number 22/435. The Tyneside Scottish book by Stewart and Sheen records David Atkinson 22/435 as being born at Birtley (County Durham). Research shows there appears to be only one D. Atkinson in the Northumberland Fusiliers whose death is recorded on 01/07/1916.

Military records show David was born at Birtley, County Durham and enlisted at Newcastle. His effects went to mother Elizabeth indicating David was not married.

David Atkinson is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43 and in Choppington on C36.01 and C36.04
