In the Blauwepoort Farm Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 11308 Lance-Corporal John Wright Todd, serving with the 2nd Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers who died 09/04/1915.

John Wright Todd was born at Norham-on-Tweed, Berwick, on the 14th February 1894. He was the grandson of John Todd of Main Street, Norham-on-Tweed.

In 1901 he was living with his grandparents Margaret and Frederick Jordan (a naval pensioner) at North Shields at 45 Dockuray? Square, with his brothers Frederick and William and his mother Lovey? T. S. Dodds then aged 38, Shopkeeper and Baker.

John was educated at Norham-on-Tweed, and was a Baker. In the 1911 census he is an apprentice baker working with an Alex Todd his nephew, [other sources say he was a Salmon Fisherman].

He enlisted into the 2nd Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers on October 1911. John left for France on the 14th August 1914. He was killed in action on the 9th April 1915, killed by a sniper.

Another soldier [Private Foreman] from the same Battalion had written to say that he was shot in the head and taken to hospital never regaining consciousness.

He has the unfortunate distinction of being the first casualty from Norham to have been killed in WW1.
