In Berwick upon Tweed Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 81034 Pilot Officer John Hogg Erskine, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 01/01/1941.

The headstone reads:

In memory of
Pilot Officer John Hogg Erskine
48th Squadron R.A.F.
Killed in action Jan. 1941 aged 26 years.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

P/O Erskine was killed when Avro Anson I R3305 of 48 Squadron was lost on a convoy patrol mission. The Anson struck the ground in bad weather, crashing on the beach at Hoylake, with the loss of all four crew members.
