Crossman, W.R.M., 2nd Lieut., 1914

W.R.M. Crossman

On the Ypres (Menin Gate) is the name of 2nd Lieutenant William Ronald Morley Crossman, serving with the 2nd Battalion, (60th Foot), The King's Royal Rifle Corps who died 02/11/1914.

William was born at Beal, Northumberland on the 6th September 1894, son of the late Major Lawrence Morley Crossman, J. P., Lord of the Manor of Holy Island. He died in 1901.*

He was educated at Lyndhurst then Wellington College. Then attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

He was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in he King's Royal Rifle Corps on the 25th February 1914. He was killed in action on the 2nd November 1914 at Veldhock.

*Robert Crossman (1803-1883) owner of the Berwick brewery, Mann, Crossman and Paulin; and the Cheswick and Holy Island Estates. His eldest son William Crossman (1830-1901) undertook an illustrious career in the Army prior to moving to Cheswick. He served at the Cyrstal Palace Great Exhibition during 1851.

On his retirement and succession to the Cheswick properties he took a major part in activities in Northumberland. He was a J.P., Alderman of the County Council, President of the Berwickshire Naturalists Club and Chairman of the Tweed Commission. A keen archaeologist he undertook major excavations of Holy Island Priory.
