Findlay, D.J., Spr., 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of 66321 Sapper David Jaffrey Findlay, serving with the Royal Engineers who died 11/08/1915.

Soldiers Died in the Great War states that 66321 David Jeffrey (sic) Findlay was born in Kilwinning, Perthshire, serving with the Royal Engineers, enlisted in Sunderland and lived in Seaham Harbour, Co. Durham.

David Jaffrey Findlay was living at 3 Aline Street Seaham Harbour in 1911 working as an agricultural blacksmith. His wife Margaret Shiel and eight month old son John Samuel Wallace Findlay (born Glasgow) are living with him.

The Berwickshire News and Advertsier 28/09/1915 reports:-

Mrs Findlay, 8 Vane Terrace, Seaham Harbour (nee Miss Maggie Wallace, of Berwick), has received intimation from the War Office that her husband. Sapper David Jaffrey Findlay, 68th Field Co., Royal Engineers, was Killed in Action at the Dardanelles, on Aug. 10. Sapper Findlay, who was 41, was a shoeing smith to the late Mr Robert Brydon (Berwickshire man and native of Lauder), at Stud Farm, Dawdon Dene, Seaham Harbour. He enlisted in January and left England for Dardanelles July 1. He had been at Seaham Harbour 5 years, having come from Glasgow. He leaves a widow and 2 children. Deceased had a brother, a nephew and 4 cousins serving King and Country, and Mrs Findlay has a brother, nephew, brother-in-law, and 2 second cousins in the Forces. Two the number are from Canada, one from Australia, 2 from England and the rest from Scotland.
