Dixon, S.E., Nurse, 1944
On the Brookwood 1939-1945 Memorial is the name of 206968 Sister Sarah Elizabeth Dixon, serving with the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service who died 24/01/1944.

The Queen Alexandra's Nursing site gives 1942 as the date of death, as does the plaque in the church. All other records including the Probate Record state 1944.

The Berwickshire News and Advertiser 07/03/1944 reports:
"Lost at Sea.
Sister Sarah Elizabeth (Bessie) Dixon, Q.A.I.M.N.S/R., who was serving on a hospital ship, has been posted missing presumed lost in January, 1944. She is the elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dixon, East Ditchburn, Eglingham. Sister Dixon qualified as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. At the outbreak of war she volunteered for active service. She nursed Sir Thomas Oliver during his illness and then went to hospitals at Shotley Bridge, Lincoln and Kirkwall. She joined the hospital ship on May 14th, 1943. After the ship had been hit Sister Dixon and Sister Harrison stayed on board to help with the wounded."
