Thomas Knox Lockey

Walter Lockey

On the Arras Memorial is the name of 34642 Lance-Corporal Thomas Knox Lockey, serving with the 9th Battalion (Service) Northumberland Fusiliers who died 21/03/1918.

Thomas was born on the 11th November 1894, in Alnwick. He was the 2nd son of the late William Lockey, who was a private, [in 1901], in the Border Regiment, [then became a Rural Postman], and his wife Margaret, (45 Lisburn Street, Alnwck), daughter of John and Ellen Wardle.

They had 4 children, John, Thomas, Walter, and Ellen, they were all residing at 2 Tower Lane, Alnwick, Northumberland in 1911.

Thomas had been educated at Alnwick School, and was a slater by profession.

Thomas enlisted in 1914, and arrived in France and Flanders on the 20th April 1915.

In the absence of a service record, we believe that Thomas was in the 2/1st Northumberland Yeomanry before being transferred to the 9th Battalion. He is not on the embarkation Roll or on the Roll of Honour for this battalion. Also he embarked for France in April 1915, the 9th Battalion arrived in July 1915.

9th (Service) Battalion were formed at Newcastle in September 1914 as part of K2 and came under orders of 52nd Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division. Landed in France in July 1915. Then in August 1917 were transferred to 103rd Brigade, 34th Division. 25th September 1917, they absorbed the 2/1st Northumberland Yeomanry and became the 9th (Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry) Bn.26th May 1918 : transferred to 183rd Brigade, 61st (2nd South Midland) Division.

He was killed in action on the 21st March 1918.

Stuart Lockey has provided the two photos shown here of the two brothers. He says:

I saw an article on the NEWMP about my great uncle Thomas Knox Lockey from Alnwick, he was the older brother of my grandfather Walter, as you say they lived in Tower Lane Alnwick in 1911. You ask if anyone has more information about him to forward it on. I have photos taken in uniform of my grandfather Walter and Thomas which I have attached.

Thomas Knox Lockey is remembered at Alnwick on A11.01, A11.03 in A11.09 page 15, and A11.56 page 10 and 33
