He was killed in Spitfire IX MA799 of 131 Squadron, which crashed whilst making a formation turn in bad weather, at Everley Farm, near Blandford, Dorset, on December 1st 1943.
The Morpeth Herald of Friday 10/12/1943 reported on page one:
“Alnwick airman buried
Many of the townspeople, an officer and a member of the W.A.A.F., representing the Royal Air Force, and the local A.T.C. Cadets under Flight-Officer W. Wilson, attended the funeral at Alnwick Cemetery, on Monday, of Flight Sergeant Wm. Eric Wood (24), son of Mrs. Wood and the late Mr. James Wood, of Narrowgate, Alnwick, who was killed in an operational flight. The Rev. A. L. McArthur, of Clayport Presbyterian Church, conducted the burial service.”
