Carole Fife has submitted the following:
Andrew's military record shows that he was born in Amble and enlisted in Alnwick. He was born in 1894 and in the 1901 census his place of birth is shown as Amble and his parents are William and Caroline. In 1901 and 1911 the family were living at Roxburgh Street, Alnwick and William was a baker. Andrew is named on the memorial at St Cuthbert's, Bedlington, but doesn't appear on either of the Coal Company Rolls of Honour, so it is more likely that he moved in search of work as a baker.
Anthony Hanton is remembered at Alnwick on A11.01,A11.03,A11.09,A11.22,A11.27, in Bedlington on B15.09 and in the Battalion History
Footnote:-
On 23rd July 2019 Paul Reed sent in the following:
Andrew Hanton died in 1915. He lived in Alnwick but had connections in Bedlington.
Are there any living relatives? If so, I have a few items which I would like to hand over. These include the scroll given to all families of the fallen, and a memorial card for his sister Alice who died in 1917.
This appeal was placed on the website and within a few days an e-mail was received which read:
I am Susan Burnley and l am the great niece of Andrew Hanton. My father Albert Henderson was the son of Andrew's sister Christina.
The family had moved from Alnwick to Bedlington and that was where my father was born.
My Father would have been delighted to know there are items connected with his uncle's death
On 24/11/2019 the following e-mail was received from Paul Reed:
The items have now been returned to Susan Burnley and her family. The mystery of who gave them to my father has also been solved.
Many thanks for your help.
