Cowe, R.G.C., 1939-45 (1999)
The Northumberland Gazette 30/9/1999 reports:

Duke's School old-boy dies.
A local-born man, Robert George Collin Cowe, who served in the Army during the Second World War and was bursar at an Oxford College, has died aged 82.

Mr. Cowe was born in Amble on September 24 1917, and was a pupil at the Duke's School, Alnwick, before moving on to Berwick Grammar School and Edinburgh University, where he was awarded an MA in Classics in 1939.

He entered the Army and rose to the rank of major in the Royal Artillery, seeing action in Tunisia and Italy, before returning to Aldershot as an instructor.

A job with the National Coal Board from 1947-70 followed, with a stint as secretary between 1960-67, before he became managing director of the Associated Heat Services in 1967.

In 1970 Mr. Cowe became senior bursar at the Magdalen College in Oxford and was awarded an MA for his hob.

He retired in 1980 and filled some of his time by becoming involved in BBC Radio Oxford.

He leaves a wife, Gladys, and a daughter, Julia.
