Apprentice Goodfellow was posted as missing presumed drowned when the S.S. Embassage" owned by Hall Bros. Ltd. of Newcastle was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean by U-557. The Master, 32 crew members and six gunners were lost.

John Knight has explained the change of address:

Edward's parents lived at 20, Stott Street but owned a tobacconists at 10, Bondgate Within, which explains why Edward's medals were sent there. Today it is a Chinese restaurant.

It has been reported that there were 3 survivors from the "Embassage" who were picked up on 31st August by HMCS Assiniboine and landed in Greenock.
