Nelson, J., 3rd Eng., 1917
On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Third Engineer James Nelson, serving with the Mercantile Marine who died on the 26/04/1917.

He was the son of Stephen and Caroline Nelson, of 40, Falconer Street, Shieldfields, Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was born at Percy Main, Newcastle-on-Tyne.

S.S. Caithness was a steamer built by W. Doxford and Sons at Sunderland in 1898. 3,500 Tons. It was torpedoed by U Boat U-52 on the 20th April 1917, 130 miles NWxN of Cape Ortegal. After sailing from the Tyne. Commanded by Kapitänleutnant, Hans Walther. There was a total of 47 Casualties.
