Ernest Barker was born at Horwich, near Bolton, Lancashire, on the 13th May 1895, the second son of John Barker, Lifton House, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Assistant General Secretary of the Boilermaker's Society and Iron and Steel Shipbuilders Society, a member of the Newcastle City Council, and his wife Laura Jane, daughter of John Loeson, of Crewe, Chester.
Ernest was educated at Council Schools at Bolton and Newcastle, including West Jesmond Council School.
He was employed with Messrs R. Robinson & Co Ltd., wholesale stationers, Clavering Place, Newcastle, as a Book binder. He was also a fine athlete.
His elder brother was with the 19th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.
He joined the Tyneside Naval Volunteers in January 1914, but was killed in action in the Dardanelles on the 4th June 1915. [Third Battle of Krithia, this is where the Battalion took very heavy casualties. The (4th) Collingwood Battalion was ordered to support the Hood Battalion attack at 12.15, they lost hundreds before even reaching the original British Front line].
