Joseph Ash was born on the 25th December 1897, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, son of John Ash of 20 Oak Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
He was educated at the Milford Street Board School, and was an Apprentice Rivetter at the firm of Armstrong Whitworth and Co.
He volunteered and enlisted in the Royal Navy Division on the 9th September 1914. Joseph served at the Dardanelles with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.
He was wounded on the 12th July 1915 and died of his wounds on the 8th August 1915 at Cairo Red Cross Hospital.
