Thomas was born at Newcastle upon Tyne, the brother of J Birkett of 10 Jarrett Street, Newcastle and Mary Ann Birkett of 10 Tarset Street, Newcastle.
He enlisted at Newcastle and served with ‘B’ Battery, 60th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and was formerly (1349, Gunner, Royal Field Artillery).
Thomas was killed in action on 23 May 1918.
