NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

Dixon-Brown, W., Pte., 1917
In Coxyde Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16/132 Private William Dixon Brown, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 19/09/1917.

He is remembered in the Battalion History page 99

The CWGC has his name as William Dixon-Brown. They have been asked to check this, and have responded thus:

Whilst most military documentation available does not have the hyphenated surname, we do not feel that this is sufficient evidence for us to affect a change as the hyphen is clearly something we were asked to include at the time by his wife Dorothy. There is every possibility, especially with phonetics etc. that the military documentation is incorrect.

Additionally, having performed some research into Dorothy, she too was using the hyphenated surname as this is present on her re-marriage in April/May/June 1925.

Without any further evidence in the form of both a birth and death certificate and any document that contains his signature, we are unable to perform any change to our records.
