Batey, T., Pte., 1915
In Clacton Cemetery, Essex is the Commonwealth War Grave of 95808 Private Thomas Batey serving with 28th Division Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery who died 13/09/1915.

Sue Carmichael has provided the following:

Thomas was the son of Archibald and Margaret Batey (nee Stonebank). He was born in the third quarter of 1886 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Between 1869, the year his parents had married, and 1886, the family had moved from Tanfield, County Durham to Benwell.

In 1891 he lived with his mother, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and 2 boarders in Garden Street, Benwell, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His mother was a dressmaker.

His father lived in Delaval Street, Benwell with Thomas’s two younger brothers.

His father was a colliery onsetter.

By 1901 Thomas had moved to 5 Delaval Terrace, Benwell with his mother, 3 brothers and a sister.

The 1911 census shows Thomas lived at 4 Delaval Street, Benwell with his mother and a brother. He was working as a miner coal putter.

His name does not appear on any local memorial
