Flight Sgt. Smith, who was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on February 2nd 1914, was killed when Handley Page Halifax II JB842 KN-E of 77 Squadron was lost on a mission to Berlin. The Halifax crashed near Ostersoen, Denmark, with the loss of all seven crew members. It is thought that it may have been attacked by a Luftwaffe night-fighter.
