Sgt. Forster was killed when Handley Page Halifax III NA612 6U-P of 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit was lost on a diversionary flight, supporting main bomber operations. On its return to the UK the Halifax fell victim to a Luftwaffe intruder, being shot down at 01.44 near Brafferton, near Thirsk, with the loss of all seven crew members. Sgt. Forster, the Flight Engineer, was the only R.A.F. member of the crew, the other six all being Canadians.
