Edward James Dunleavy was born at 36 New Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1860 to Patrick Dunleavy, born 1824, and his wife Bridget nee Tarpy, born 1832, died 1899, the eldest child of seven children. The other children were Esther White Dunleavy, born 25th January 1886, baptised 10th February 1886, died 1969, married a Joseph P. Roberts, in 1904, Edward Dunleavy born 15th August 1888, died 1939, Edmund Dunleavy born 3rd February 1891, died 1960, Catherine Dunleavy born 29th March 1893, died 1895, Arthur Nicholls Dunleavy born 30th May 1895, baptised 23rd June 1895 at St Dominic's Church, died 1971, (he married a May nee Bollard on the 26th March 1921 at Liverpool, he worked for the railways), and Christina Dunleavy, born 26th October 1897, died 1973. Christina in 1919 was residing at 1 Summerhill Grove, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Edward James Dunleavy was a Bricklayer, and was residing at 8 Scot Entry, Newcastle-upon-Tyne between 1871 and 1881, by 1891. He was married to Christine nee White, on the 16th October 1884. And by 1891, they were residing at 18 Richmond Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Edward James Dunleavy was in the 3rd Battalion, then transferred into the 1st Battalion Garrison Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Service number 24834, with the rank of Staff-Sergeant. Edward did not serve overseas, but was based in the North East. He died of disease in the Gosforth War Hospital on the 20th November 1919.

His daughter Christina made an application for her fathers pension in 1919/20.

Edward James Dunleavy is not remembered on a North East War Memorial.
