Susan Carmichael has provided the following information.
He was born in 1895, the son of John David and Amelia Barr (nee Edwards).
His parents were married in the 4th quarter of 1891. His Father was a police officer, and in the census of 1891 was living in the Police Barracks, City Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
In 1901 Herbert was living with his parents, and his grandmother at 30, Malcolm Street, Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
By 1911 the family lived at 84 Hotspur Street, Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Herbert was working as a solicitor’s clerk.
He served in the 1st/7th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, having formerly served as 27763 with the Northumberland Fusiliers.
