The memorial at Garrowby Hill: Tony Hibberd

In Newcastle upon Tyne (All Saints) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1042582 Flight Sergeant (Pilot) Stanley Bright serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 07/02/1944.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Stanley, Flt.Sgt. (Pilot) R.A.F.V.R.
killed 7th February 1944 in his 23rd year.
Dearly loved only son of
Thomas and Mary Bright

Sgt. Bright was serving with 1663 Heavy Conversion Unit ( H.C.U.) He was a crew member of Halifax V DK192 which took off from Rufforth on a cross-country training flight in misty weather. The aircraft crashed into Garrowby Hill, killing all eight crew. A memorial to the crew was erected on Garrowby Hill in 1996, the prime mover for this being a man who had not gone on the flight because of a hospital operation.

Tony Hibberd has submitted this photo of the memorial on the site of the crash at Garrowby Hill, East Yorkshire. It was erected in 1996, the prime mover being a man who had not gone on this flight because of a hospital operation.

Also killed in the same incident was John Kingsley Meyler

Stanley Bright is remembered in Gosforth on G9.02 at Whorlton on W53.02 and in an RAF Roll of Honour
