Colin Boyd, who is a great-great cousin to Sgt. Boyd, has submitted the following:

Joseph Russell Boyd was born 23rd October 1884 in St. Anthonys, Newcastle upon Tyne the son of John George Boyd and his wife Elisabeth Catherine - one of 6 children.

He married Jane Ann Warriner at St. Silas Church in Byker on 4th April 1904 and they went on to have 7 children. At the time of his death they were living at 4, Fell Street, St. Peters.

He attested for the Royal Field Artillery in October 1914 and went on to serve in France and Flanders. He was awarded the Military Medal, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal and was discharged from service on 22nd April 1919.

Joseph died of TB in the City Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Walkergate on 4th November 1920.
