Ernest was the son of James Crawford, born March 17th 1890, a printer compositor, and Margaret Paterson Hadden. He had five siblings, Isabella, John Goodler, Herbert Towler, Annie Goodler and Frank Lindsay.
Ernest was killed in the attack on Greenland Hill part of the battle of Arras June 5th to June 8th 1917.
William Kirby has also added that the 1911 Census shows him to have been a Certificated Assistant Teacher. The List of Teachers Who Fell show him teaching at Gateshead Windmill Hills County School.
At the time of his death his effects amounted to £10 18s 11d. His War Gratuity was £8 10s.
