On the Basra Memorial is the name of Second Lieutenant Reginald Cooksey Burton, serving with the Indian Army Reserve of Officers who died 09/04/1916.

Reginald Cooksey Burton was born on the 10th March 1890. He studied at Armstrong College from 1907-1910 and graduated with a BSc (distinction in geology) in June 1910. He was elected a fellow of the Geological Society on the 14th June 1911.

54 Albert Street, Western Hill, Durham, County Durham (place of residence 1891 Census), then 13 Edward Street, Bishop Auckland, County Durham in 1901, then 35 Tavistock Road, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1911.

He graduated from the University of Durham with a BSc (distinction in geology) in 1910. In January 1912, he joined the Geological Survey of India as Assistant-Superintendent and was posted to the Central Provinces where he studied the origins of calcareous gneisses and bauxite of the area and adjoining districts. Fellowship details: No.4861, elected 14th June 1911 to the The Geological Society of London.

Burton joined the Indian Army Reserve of Officers early in April 1915, and after a short training in India, was attached to the 125th Napier’s Rifles. Then was attached to the 104th Rifles in Mesopotamia, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was shot by a sniper, dying two days later on the 9th April 1916.

Reginald Cooksey Burton is remembered in Jesmond on J1.04 and J1.19, in Durham on D47.151 and in Newcastle on NUT063
