JESMOND

Benson, H.L., 2nd Lieut., 1916
In Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Second Lieutenant Henry Laurence Benson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 11/04/1916.

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 18/04/1916 reports:

"Killed by shrapnel shell.
Lieut. H.L. Benson of Newcastle.

Intelligence has reached Newcastle that Lieut. Henry Laurence Benson, a well-known and highly respected Newcastle gentleman, was killed by shrapnel shell last Tuesday.

Lieut. Benson, who was attached to the Northumberland Fusiliers, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Benson, of 'Denehurst', Jesmond Park East, Newcastle, and was only 26 years of age. He enlisted in the territorials on the declaration of war as a private, leaving Newcastle for the front on April 20 of last year. He was engaged in the St.Julien battle a few days afterwards. In November he was wounded and was in hospital for five weeks, receiving his commission a little later.

Henry Benson was educated at Aysgarth School and Charterhouse and was by profession a solicitor, being with Mr. Cuthbert T. Benson, Newcastle. He was a valued member of the Law Students' Debating Society and was an all-round sportsman, being captain of the Bohemians Football Club for a few seasons. He also represented local amateur football against Scotland, and was a playing member of the South Northumberland Cricket Club and a member of the Gosforth Golf Clubs. He held office at the Sandyford Road United Methodist Church, Newcastle."

He is remembered in Gosforth on G9.05 and G9.40, in Heaton on H91.38 , in Jesmond on J1.45 and in Newcastle on NUT061, NUT137 and NUT159
