In Newcastle (Jesmond Old) Cemetery is a headstone which reads:

Of your charity pray for the soul of
Lieutenant Robert Donald, M.C.
British Expeditionary Force
24th Northumberland Fusiliers
First Tyneside Irish, killed in action
April 28th 1917, aged 27 years.
R.I.P.

KILLED IN ACTION

Lieutenant Robert Donald, Northumberland Fusiliers, son of Councillor A. F. Donald of Akenside Terrace, Newcastle, previously reported missing on April 28, is now reported to have been killed in action on that date. Lieutenant Donald who before the war managed his father's business in Northumberland Street, was a prominent member of the Benton Golf Club. It was announced on Wednesday that he had been awarded the Military Cross.
