The marriage took place at St. Barnabas Church, Newcastle, of Captain Ralph W. Owen, M.C., 8th North Staffords, only son of Mr. and Mrs. B.P. Owen, Plymouth, and Miss Mary Swan, eldest daughter of ex-Sergeant and Mrs. Jas. Swan, of Vulcan House, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. A. Thomas, Vicar of St. Barnabas. The bride, who was given away by her father. was attired in a coat dress of cream gaberdine, white felt hat, ermine necklet, and carried a bouquet of pink carnations. She was attended by Miss Gracie Jackson as bridesmaid, who was attired in a coat dress of brown velvet and georgette sleeves and ermine necklet and carried a bouquet of pink carnations. After a reception held in St. Barnabas’ Hall, the happy pair left for Essex and Devon, where their honeymoon will be spent, prior to the bridegroom returning to France. Mr. Harry Cook, Chingford, acted as groomsman. The wedding flowers were afterwards placed on the window erected to the memory of the late Lance Corporal George Swan 1st Northern Cyclists, brother of the bride. Captain Owen and his bride have been connected with St. Barnabas’ Church for some years, being Sunday-school scholars together, confirmed together, and members of the old 1st Jesmond Troops of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides respectively. Captain Owen , who is in the regular army, went out to France in August, 1914, as a corporal in the 12th Lancers, won his commission on the field in 1916, and was wounded for the first and only time in September 1917; returned to France in July 1918, and won his M.C. in the last big battle November 1918.”
