Hugh De Chastelai Casley was born in Jesmond on the 31st August 1886, and was the only son of Wilbraham John Braddick Casley, of Coatham, Redcar, a Civil Engineer and his wife Mrs E. Casley.
They resided at 5 St Vincent Terrace, Coatham, Yorkshire.
Hugh was educated at Coatham Grammar School and Charterhouse where he was in the O.T.C.
He was articled to Head Wrightson & Co, Ltd., of Stockton-On-Tees, as an engineer, however he left that company for Dorman, Long and Co., Ltd., of Middlesbrough, and became a member of the Cleveland Institute of Engineers.
At the outbreak of the war he was gazetted as a 2nd Lieutenant to the 6th (Service) Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, and was promoted to a Lieutenant on the 2nd February 1915, as well as taking charge of the machine-gun section.
He left the UK on the 3rd July 1915, from Liverpool aboard the HMTS Aquitania, and landed at Mudros Bay on the island of Lemnos on the 10th July. 10 days later moved to Imbros for preparations for action in the Dardanelles.
On the 6th August 1915, he received his orders with his Battalion. He landed on the beach south of the salt lake at Sulva Bay in the early hours of the 7th August 1915. They first moved to a Turkish trench on Hill 20 and then moved on to the foot of the hill known as Lala Baba.
He was killed leading his men across the Salt Lake to attack Anafarta on the 7th August 1915.
He was unmarried.
