In St Andrew's and Jesmond Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Second Lieutenant Richard Arthur Henry Brittain serving with the 120th (Training) Squadron Royal Air Force who died 15/05/1918.

The headstone reads:

Loving memory
of
Richard Arthur Henry
Brittain
2nd Lieut. Royal Air Force
Born August 5th 1899
killed in an aeroplane accident
at Cramlington May 15th 1918.

Royal Victoria Infirmary Coroner's Report No. 222 dated 17th May 1918.

"Richard Arthur Henry Brittain 18 years. 2nd Lieutenant 120 Squadron, R.A.F. Cramlington. Home address Westbourne, Wellingon, Salop. Killed on the Aerodrome at Cramlington at 5.50 pm on 15th May 1918.

Deceased was killed through an Aeroplane in which he was a passenger having accidentally fallen to the ground on the Aerodrome Cramlington. in consequence of the pilot having attempted to turn the Aeroplane when too near the ground after having lost flying speed."
