Simon Glancey has submitted the following:
Sgt. Smith was killed when Handley Page Halifax III MZ981 of 644 Squadron was lost on a training flight. The Halifax left R.A.F. Tarrant Rushton for a long-range navigation exercise, but hit cloud covered Mont Valier in the Pyrenees, near the Spanish border, with the loss of all seven crew members. Initially they were buried in a local cemetery, then transferred to Marseilles.
Also killed in the same incident was Sgt. W.W. Quinn
Kingsley Smith is remembered at Heaton on H91.16 and in Newcastle upon Tyne on NUT064
