Simon Glancey has submitted the following:
Corporal Straughan was killed when Fokker XXII HM159 of Transport Command crashed on a freight and passenger flight between Tiree and Abbotsinch (now Glasgow Airport). The aircraft had left Tiree at 16.42, and at 17.12 it signalled that it would have to make an emergency landing on the sea. It was seen to come down through thick cloud, its starboard wing on fire, and it hit the sea west of Kintyre and burst into flames. All twenty passengers and crew were killed.
The aircraft was built in 1934 and had been in service with K.L.M. as PH-AJR, and was bought by Scottish Aviation as a navigational trainer, with the UK registration G-AFXR. It had been impressed into R.A.F. service in 1941, serving with 24 Squadron, before joining No. 1680 Flight at R.A.F. Abbotsinch in October 10th 1942.
Also killed in the same incident was Cpl. J. Straughan
Thomas Robert Wills is remembered in Heaton on H91.02
