Robinson, R.S., Sgt., awarded DCM, 1916

Newcastle Daily Chronicle 14/8/1916

Newcastle Daily Chronicle 14/08/1916 reports:

“Heaton Man’s Bravery rewarded.
Sergeant R.S. Robinson, of the Royal Fusiliers, a Newcastle man, has won the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and has also been recommended for a commission. He is a son of Mr. W.W. Robinson, 40 Simonside Terrace, Heaton. Sergeant Robinson was wounded in action on August 2nd, while the company was going into the trenches under shell-fire, and it was owing to his bravery on this occasion that he was recommended for the D.C.M. His officer commanding writes that a shell burst at the head of his platoon, killing one sergeant and wounding several others. Those who were eye-witnesses of the occurrence say that Sergeant Robinson showed, as usual, absolute courage and great care for others; and these qualities, says his officer commanding, made him an invaluable soldier, and brought him the D.C.M., which he deserved if any man did. Although seriously wounded, he would not allow himself to be attended until others had been cared for. His officer adds that Sergt. Robinson was got safely out of the trenches, and he hopes he will have a speedy recovery.”
