Winkworth, L.S., Capt., 1914-18
Peter Walker has submitted the following:

Captain Leonard Stuart Winkworth

Leonard is shown as being with the 19th Manchester Battalion in the Lodge Temperance 2557 Roll of Honour. His WW1 medal roll index card shows him as a Lieutenant and then Captain with the Royal Engineers. It also shows that he first served in France, entering on the 23rd June 1918. He appears in the Supplement to the London Gazette of the 7th April 1915 with the temporary position of 2nd Lieutenant.

He was the son of Walter Albert and Maria Louisa Munroe Winkworth (nee Simon). They were married in 1881 and had at least three children:
•Walter Winkworth (b 1883)
•Leonard Stuart Winkworth (b 1889)
•Elsie Maud Winkworth (b 1893)
The Winkworth’s appear to have had a good standard of living because at his death in 1927 Walter Albert left Ł3751 10s 2d in his will and his wife Maria in turn left Ł5373 13s 4d to her two remaining children Leonard and Elsie.

Leonard was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne on the 30th January 1889 and in the 1911 Census was single and working as a draughtsman living with his parents, brother Walter and sister Elsie at 22, Simonside Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne. It is difficult to determine from the records if Leonard married and had children but they do show that he died at the age of 83 years in Worthing, Sussex.

Walter was a Freemason and member of Lodge Temperance No 2557 which held its meetings in the Old Assembly Rooms, Westgate Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

At the Lodge Temperance 2557 meeting on Monday 20th January 1913 Bro Fred W. Simon proposed and Bro W. Newton seconded on behalf of Walter Winkworth, Leonard Stuart Winkworth, age 24 years, a draughtsman residing at 22 Simonside Terrace. A successful ballot was held on the 17th February 1913 and he was initiated into the Mysteries and Privileges of Ancient Freemasonry on the 21st April. He was passed to the second or Fellow craft degree on 19th May and raised to the Sublime degree of Master Masson on 21st July 1913. He signed and received his Grand Lodge Certificate in open lodge on Monday the 18th August 1913.

This was very much a family affair as Leonard’s proposer was his uncle, Bro Fred W. Simon (his mum’s younger brother) who would later become master of the Lodge. He was seconded by Bro. W. Newton on behalf of his brother Walter Winkworth, who later made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for his country and is listed separately.

Leonard was welcomed back to Lodge Temperance 2557 on his return from service overseas by the Worshipful Master Arthur B. Turner at the meeting of 17th Monday February 1919 held at the Old Assembly Rooms, Westgate Road.

Leonard Stuart Winkworth is remembered at Newcastle on NUT126 and on NUT254
