Chalder, H.H., Pt/Off., 1940

In Newcastle upon Tyne (St.Nicholas) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 43691Pilot Officer (Pilot) Harry Hutchinson Chalder serving with the 41 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 10/11/1940.

The headstone reads:

In loving memoryof
Thomas,
Dearly beloved husband of
Sarah Chalder,
Died 29th Aug. 1939, aged 74 years.
Also Sarah,
Died 18th Nov. 1940, aged 70 years.
Also Harry H., dear husband of
Ann Chalder
Died 10th Nov. 1940, aged 25 years.

His family came from Fenham.

He took part in the Battle of Britain, and died from wounds later.

In his book Men of the North: A Few of The Few; Robert Dixon; Wolf’s Nick Publishing; 2011; ISBN 9781466446830 the date of P/Off. Chalder's death is given as 10th October 1940, not 10th November as given by CWGC.

This book contains a photo of P.Off. Chalder.
