Gray, F., Sgt., 1941

In St.Nicholas' Cemetery, Nuns Moor Road, is a family headstone for Gray which reads:

In loving memory of
my dear husband
Pilot.Sgt. Frederick Gray, R.A.F.
killed on active service 20th Feb. 1941
aged 25 years.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

He was flying in Blenheim V5746 of No.3 Radio School which crashed after a collision on take -off at The Aerodrome, Monkton (R.A.F. Prestwick). The cause of death was a fractured skull and extensive severe burns.

He was aged 25; his birth was registered at Gateshead, June 1915. His father was Edward Bill Gray, a dairyman, and his mother was Mary, nee Parkin.

He was married in June 1940 to Margaret Elizabeth Mensforth, whose birth was registered at Newcastle in September 1917.
