Thomas was born on 18th September 1905, the son of Thomas and Sarah and the husband of Florence (nee Henderson) of Newcastle upon Tyne, whom he married in the fourth quarter of 1930. According to the 1939 Register the couple were living with the Gribbin (Herbertson) family at 136 Back Scotswood, where Thomas was recorded as being a general labourer.
