In Newcastle (St John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

M Atkinson
Fireman
S.S. “Gleniffer”
29th January 1946, age 39.

Matthew was born on 4th December 1907 at Newburn and was the husband of Alice Perry Atkinson of Fenham. He is recorded on a passenger list for the RMT “Mauretania”, as a distressed British seaman, who was landed at the Port of Liverpool on 13th August 1943, along with a number of other seamen. The Cunard Liner was being used at that time as a troop carrier. At the time of the listing he was living at 21 Wentworth Place, Newcastle. It is not clear what happened to Matthew, but S.S. “Gleniffer” continued in service until being scrapped in 1947.
