Charles Ridley was born in the third quarter of 1888 at Gateshead, Co. Durham, the son of George Nelson and Eleanor. He was the husband of Annie (nee Mullen) whom he married at Newcastle upon Tyne in the third quarter of 1913. The couple lived at 54 Villa Place, Newcastle.

Charles Ridley enlisted on 30th November 1915 and served with the Motor Transport Section. He was discharged on 11th July 1918 under King’s Regulations, Para 392(xvi), Army Order 265 of 1917.2.(b)i – Sickness, and was awarded the Silver War Badge on 4th July 1918.
