12th November 1918.

Hugh was born in 1890 at Gateshead, Co. Durham. He was living in Ashington when he enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne on 16th March 1915 and was formerly (3115, Private, Northumberland Fusiliers) before being transferred to 4th (Reserve) Battalion, West Riding Regiment.

Hugh received a gunshot wound to his hand during active service on 3rd September 1916 at Thiepval, while with the 5th Battalion, losing three knuckles. He was discharged on 6th November 1917 and was awarded the Silver War Badge on 24th March 1918.
