Wake, W.H., Cpl., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 16/31 Corporal William Henry Wake serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory
of
Margaret Conyers Wake
wife of
William Brown Wake
died Dec.9th 1926
aged 62 years
also of their son
William Henry Wake
killed in action at Thiepval
July 1st 1916, aged 22 years,
also of the above
who died March 28th 1941
aged 77 years.

William Henry was born in the third quarter of 1894 at Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of George and Margaret (nee Nixon) of 82 Dilston Road, Newcastle. According to the 1911 Census, he was working as a ‘law clerk’.

William enlisted at Newcastle with ‘B’ Company, 16th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France, (Pier and Face; 10B, 11B and 12B).

William Henry Wake is possibly remembered as "Henry Wake" at Elswick on E35.05.

His name is in the Battalion History, page 110.
