James was born in 1896, the son of Susannah and the late Alexander of 8 Monk Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.
He enlisted for service on 29 January 1914 and formerly served as 1976, Private, Northumberland Fusiliers.
James was wounded three times during his time overseas; in 1916 he was wounded in the right thigh and face and then the spine and right shoulder. In 1917 he was wounded in the right leg. James also saw active service in Ireland.
He was discharged on 13 February 1919 as ‘a 1914 man’. He served with the 468th Protection Company.
