William was born in the third quarter of 1872 at Berwick upon Tweed, the son of Alexander and Helen (nee Jamieson). He was the husband of Laura Jane (nee Billings) of 28 Southsea Avenue, Watford, Hertfordshire whom he married on 11 December 1900 at Erdington, Warwickshire.

William served with the 1st (Northumbrian) Brigade.
