Dennis (or Denis) was born in Tipperary, Ireland in about 1865. He was the husband of Mary Ann (nee Carroll) whom he married at West Derby, Lancashire in the fourth quarter of 1888 and they lived at 46 Newcombe Street, Elswick.
Dennis had previously served as 6/2799, Private, Royal Field Artillery and is listed as being a temporary Chelsea Pensioner, receiving pension payments throughout the late 1880’s, early 1890’s.
He enlisted with the 6th Battalion on 28th September 1914 but was then transferred to 3rd Supernumerary Company on 4th August 1915, before his final transfer to 80th (Territorial Force) Depot Battalion on 4th July 1917.
He was discharged on 12th September 1917 under King’s Regulations, Sickness 392(xvi), Para 2(d) of A.U. II of 10th August 1917. Dennis was admitted to the 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne on 19th September 1917. He was awarded the Silver War Badge on 1st December 1917.
