W. Rutherford
Northumberland Fusiliers
26th February 1919, age 26.
Stars may shine
on a silent grave
on one we loved
but could not save.
William was born at West Wylam, Northumberland in 1893, the son of George and Mary, 10 Stepney Bank, Newcastle. He was the husband of Isabella (nee Dockerty) whom he married in the first quarter of 1918 at Newcastle upon Tyne. They lived at 5 Waterloo Street, Newcastle.
William initially served with the 4th (Reserve) Battalion but was transferred to 1/7th, 25th, 1/4th and 12th/13th Battalions. His discharge stated that he died of wounds (King’s Regulations Para 392/DOW; June 1918), although this conflicts with his actual death.
