Medal Card

Tyneside Irish Badge

In the Terlincthun British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 24/22 Private Thomas Cassidy serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (9th Battalion) who died 18/10/1918.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Thomas Cassidy was born in 1897 at Newcastle to parents Thomas Cassidy from Creggin, Armagh, Ireland and Dinah Cassidy from Newcastle.

In 1901 Thomas, aged 4, lived at 30, Mitford Road, Elswick, Newcastle with his parents.

In the 1911 Census Thomas is shown to be 14 years old and employed as cabinet maker’s errand boy. At this time he lived at 52, Panmure Street, Newcastle-on-Tyne with his siblings Charles 17, James 16, Laurence 13, John 10, Mary 9, Violet 7 and Theresa aged 5.

Military records show in the UK Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 Thomas enlisted at Newcastle-on-Tyne and confirm his birth place as Newcastle. His Pension Index Card shows only his mother Dinah Cassidy. Due to this and his young age it is unlikely Thomas would have been married. John Sheen's book ‘Tyneside Irish’ highlights he was in B Company and served with the 22nd, 24th/27th and 9th Battalions.

Thomas Cassidy is remembered in Elswick on E35.10 and in our list of Tyneside Irish
