In Courmas British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 78950 Private Walter Preston serving with the Durham Light Infantry, who died 23/07/1918.

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

killed in action in France
23rd July 1918, aged 19 years,
Also Mabel Elizabeth
their daughter
who died April 13th 1933, aged 41 years
Also Robert Alfred Preston
who died July 5th 1935, aged 81 years,
Also Sarah Newton Preston
who died Jan.17th 1922, aged 83 years.

Walter was born on 23rd November 1898, the son of Robert Alfred and Sarah Newton Preston, 111 Brighton Grove, Newcastle upon Tyne.

He enlisted at Newcastle with the 1st/9th Battalion and was formerly TR5/65888, Private, Training Reserve Battalion.

Walter was one of seven British soldiers to be exhumed from Jonchery-Sur-Vesle and re-buried at Courmas British Cemetery, Marne, France (Plot 2, Row B4).
