Robert Robertson was born at Bishop Auckland, Durham, on the 19th August 1882, son of the late Robert Robertson, Tabacco Spinner and his wife, Annie, of 3 Back Hedley Street, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
He was educated at St Mary's, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and enlisted in 1900, served in the latter part of the South African War, 1901--02, was 12 years with the colours.
Robert was employed at Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Elswick Shipyard. On the outbreak of war, he re-enlisted in to the 5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Robert then was transferred to the 1st Battalion.
Sent to France in January 1915, but was killed in action on the 28th February 1915 at Ypres.
He was unmarried. Robert had a brother David Robertson who was a Driver in the Royal Field Artillery and was on active service in 1916.
